The problem:
My laptop charges the battery while it is off but when it is on, the mainboard makes a ticking sound (about 3 Hz) and the power manager detects AC intermittently. It starts with AC for about 5 seconds then goes in on/off cycles almost every second.

How it has got to this:
I've used a strained power cable for more than a month. It was working most of the time, only rarely the power would turn off when the cable was in a certain position.

Other notes:
The battery that was in the laptop in the past month sets the mainboard ticking even when the laptop is off. Another battery doesn't trigger that ticking though and it is charging fine (while laptop off).
Without battery, only AC, the laptop runs for 5 seconds max.

I have opened the yellow power socket (inside x220), cleaned the contacts, pulled them slightly outward for better contact pressure.

Questions:
Could it be fixed without replacing the mainboard?
Any idea what is wrong?

Many thanks,
Dani
