I was looking for a laptop to get for college, one that would be lightweight and can get some gaming done such as Dragon age Inquisition or Mirror Edge. I do not mind playing games on low or medium and the y40 is good for portability. My concern is whether or not the y40 would be able to play future games decently because I do not want to spend another $600 for a laptop that will become obsolete in a few years.

The Lenovo Y40 is armed with a Radeon R9 M275, which about as powerful as a desktop R7 260. You'll play many modern games at medium if you're running at 1080p. As for "obsolete in a few years," this is the fate of most low-end gaming laptops. You'll be playing contemporary games for maybe 2 or 3 more years, by then already at low settings, then from then on you'll be forced to stick to older games.

If you are open to a 15.6" laptop and spending a little more money ($769), this ASUS K501 will strongly outperform the Y40:
