It depends on what you are doing. I did not buy the kit, but
rather just the body. I already had what I considered to be an
excellent zoom lens -- 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 D. (I tend to like tight
framing, so the effective longer focal length range (42-157.6mm) works
well for me most of the time.
I've never used this lens non-digital. I previously used it on
a N90s body which had been converted to digital by Kodak for the AP.
(The N90s offers somewhat faster autofocus, but with that conversion was
only 1.3 MP, and had no way to view the results until I got it to a
computer to download and covert the images from the strange RAW format
(embedded in a TIFF wrapper).
I've so far added to that a 180mm f2.8 which has been
retrofitted with a CPU so the exposure metering works, even though there
is no autofocus. That one is effectively the coverage of a 270mm.
And I occasionally use (in full manual mode) a Medical Nikor
(built-in ring flash and excellent close-up capabilities).
There are times when I would like to have a faster lens at a
real 50mm (effective 75mm), say a f1.4 or f1.8.
Beyond that -- it depends on your photographic needs. But for
*me* the first lens that I mentioned works very well most of the time.
Others, perhaps with more money to spend on *new* lenses (the
28-105mm is the only one which I have purchased new) will have other
suggestions.
