These speakers have 500 watts of power. Do they really need a soundcard?

I have the x-530's(5.1). A decent sound card made a good difference in sound quality for me. My new motherboard has a decent sound card built in and it is a lot higher quality than my older onboard Realtek HD audio.

You don't REALLY need it if your on board sound card is good enough, but it will help a lot sound quality wise if your on board sound is low end. Hope this makes sense, lol.
