i have recently bought audio technica ATH-AD900X headphones and very quickly realised my onboard audio chip would not do the job. I am looking for a cheap soundcard (100CAD or less). i have been looking into asus xonar cards and was not sure which to take. i know i do not need an amp'd card, what would be a good choice?

There's really two main options:

1: ASUS Xonar DG

The more budget option, but does have an amp built in.

2: Creative Soundblaster Z

The more upscale option, also with an amp.

Other cards, like the ASUS Xonar DX, simply aren't worth it, unless you can snag one for about $50. Everything else under $100 simply isn't worth the price for the benefits they bring.
