Looking for something to run PS4/PC through

Hi everyone.

I'm currently in the midst of putting together a new sound system for my PC/PS4. I'm looking for something to run my PS4 and PC through the same output which I can just switch inputs rather than digging behind my desk to unplug my current speakers from PC to the PS4 and vice versa. I intend to use a set of bookshelf speakers or something thereabouts, however I'm not sure what to look for to do this. Is this the job of an Amplifier or a receiver or something I haven't mentioned?

I was looking at purchasing the Logitech z906 system (http/www.logitech.com/en-au/product/speaker-system-z906) as the control console is exactly what I was after (Input selection, volume etc), however they don't look very nice and I've also heard alot of negative things about the quality of the system.


Any help would be greatly appreciated. Forgive my lack of knowledge in the audio world.

Get an AVR and some good speakers. There are good entry level AVRs from Yamaha (RX-V379), Denon (AVR-X1200W), Pioneer (Pioneer VSX-330-K) etc. for example. You´ll most likely be more happy with that than those crappy Logitech "systems". Just my 2 cents.

Yeah something like that is what I'm looking for! Are there any similar to these that are a bit smaller? It's more for a desktop setup as opposed to a home theatre setup. so something more discreet would be perfect

If you want surround then you're basically bound to a receiver and they are generally cheaper too. Do you have speakers yet?

I don't have speakers as of yet. Something like that Nada amp would be perfect as I basically just want something I can run the console and PC through to some good speakers so i can just switch the input between the two to output through the speakers. I've looked at AVRs and stuff but they are huge, and I don't really need the video inputs. Like I said before, the console on the logitech z906 system is exactly what I need and nothing more but I'm having a hard time trying to find something that does only that.

As for the speakers I'm looking at some Audioengine bookshelf speakers, but still unsure wether I'll need a sub or not

z906 is boomy, average quality. hifi speakers will blow them away but they arent bad for 'pc speakers'. you can do better but its certainly convenient how they have the inputs set up.

if you went with just a 2.0 system, a simple A/B switch would work (with powered speakers) although for ps4 use you might need to use the controller output or use an audio extractor device to get audio given the lack of analog out on the actual device. for pc use it will work fine as is. likely the easiest to find and set up without research although having two boxes is bulkier (but still smaller than a receiver by far).

a receiver also works but is a more expensive solution. you would be needing passive speakers not actives for that (non self powered). you dont want to try using one with powered speakers and its really too big of a solution for your needs.

another option would be if you find an external dac unit with two switchable inputs. you could use its analog low level output to some powered speakers. i know of some high end products that do this.. but i cant think of any cheaper ones (i'm sure they exist) that do this off the top of my head. this would eliminate a switchbox and extractor.

If you're looking at powered speakers, then you just need a DAC with usb and optical in. Actually some speakers have a dac built and have all of these inputs. The one that comes to mind is this one

Kind of pricy, but to some the space saving is worth it. Ditto on the external DAC with switchable inputs if you want to use powered speakers. Do you have a budget in mind?
