I'd like to ask for help as I never done anything similar and I would like to see if this is even possible. So, I have an oldish laptop (Acer Aspire 5315) and I would like to connect it to my new home theater (Samsung HT-J4100 5.1 Channel 1000-Watt Blu-Ray Home Theater System (2015 Model).

looks like you have a cheap HTIB unit there with limited connectivity.

your two options are either using a headphone to rca cable for stereo 2.0 input or an optical input (your laptop likely doesnt have this so a soundcard or adapter is needed) for likely only 2.0 sound. optical (if both the htib and soundcard support it) is capable of 5.1 but in most cases cheap htibs do not support it.

in short, i'd just use a 3.5mm to rca red+white cable to connect.
