Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase two laptops. One for my mother and one for myself. I'm and windows guy and shes a apple girl. Currently I don't own a laptop, but my mother owns a 2007 macbook that has slowed significantly, and it's time for an upgrade. I plan to simply transfer all of her microsoft office files over from computer to computer as she has no programs that she must have.

As for the form for your ease of use I'll fill out two, the first for my mother:

1. What is your budget?
$1100 (close to at least)
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
13" give or take
3. What screen resolution do you want?
Pretty much now everything is within par of each other, but something clear and crisp. Pretty good I would say.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portable
5. How much battery life do you need?
She takes to work, so something that can punch out a good day's of work. I haven't payed much attention to what is out there, but the new Air's are racking in 13ish hours, while some of the PC's are bring in around 6-10?
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
Nope, just microsoft office.
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Microsoft office
Presentations
Movies
Videos
Web surfing
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
250gb+
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
Newegg is what I know, but whatever has the best deal is where I'll buy. I trust you guys!
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
As long as possible without it becoming outdated, and I use that lightly because I know the moment you purchase anything in the world of computers it's outdated. She will more than likely buy a new one once this one is too slow to deal with.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Dvd rom is helpful but not a must.
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
Whatever the best deal is.
13. What country do you live in?
United States

***14:***Please tell us any additional information if needed
The most crucial aspect is that she does not want a bulky laptop, as light as we can get it in the price range while maintaining a good battery life. I'd also say 4gb+ of ram is a needed but from there on out it's what you can come up with. The two things that my mother did specify is that she doesn't want something bulky. She likes how thin the macbook air feels, but I know you can get so much more for your money. Then she needs to to be durable, not that she will drop it but you know what I mean.

To avoid confusion this is in regards to the laptop that I will be purchasing.

Without filling the form I'll say I'm looking to a similar laptop, my budget is up to $1500. I would like around a 14" screen give or take, but the main thing is that I also want to get maximum battery life while also having a lightweight laptop. I really would like as lightweight as possibe within reason, something thin too. It needs to be strong, thin, lightweight, and have decent battery life. I'm thinking 5/6+ hours or more preferably.

As for resolution, I plan to use the laptop for 3D design, solidworks and blender. Along with other CAD programs. Aside from that it will be a school laptop and the occasional video editing, but nothing special. I'm thinking 8gb+ of ram and at least 256gb of storage. SSD if possible. Definitely a PC, and that's about it. I'll leave it to you.

OK, rechecking...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314448

SSD or HDD isn't listed there for some odd reason but the same thing is on Amazon listed with 256GB SSD

That looks pretty sleek, have you seen anything on the Lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon? I love it but I've heard some iffy things about last years model and then I've seen it priced from $1000-2000... Don't know what to say.

Is there anything that's any thinner than that?

Well I searched out the first two assuming $1k was an upper limit. The really thinner and lighter ones, "ultrabooks" tend to go a bit over that. Also, nothing I looked at under that price had better than 1366x768 screen resolution.

If it's within a few hundred, toss it my way. If she buys a mac book air it'll be $1200 after taxes and all. I should save that online.

As for the iffy things, I've just seen not the best reviews online. There was also just a lot that it had some structural issues, although I never saw anything about the actual performance.
