LOUD scratching noise coming from computer speakers?

yesterday my speakers did something really weird and all of a sudden they stopped working and instead are doing this: https://youtu.be/qub4sz_9b3I
They are the Boston BA745 speakers so they are a bit old and in fact probably older than me as my brother gave to me a long time ago before he went to college. Again, it would be nice if someone could help me out. I may need to get new ones.

The scratchy noise when you turn the knob is a dirty volume pot. Age related for sure. With the speakers powered off rotate the control all the way back and forth 20-40 times. Sometimes this will clean the control. The lack of sound is probably a separate issue. Time for new speakers unless you want an electronics project fixing these.
