I am currently using the apple earpods that came with my phone for gaming and watching movies. I am getting the m40x for Christmas and they are clearly better.

I just wanted to know how they will sound compared to the earpods when listening to music and gaming. How is the base compared to them? Will explosions in games sound good? Would I be better off getting something like Hyper X Cloud II? If I got the Hyper X Cloud II would they sound good whilst listening to music and watching music?

Thanks

while apple earbuds are surprisingly not bad at all the m40x is going to be better overall depending on your tastes of course.

if its bass you want perhaps it would have been wise to go after the (last gen model) ath-m50s which you can get for about $100-110 on ebay. build quality is much better and more bass output.

closed cans like the m50 will have a small soundstage, and even compared with closed cans the m50 is very small in soundstage. basically everything will sound very close - they lack depth. what closed cans do offer is isolation from outside noise.

open cans have soundstage so will have a more airy, 3d sound with more depth perception though leak sound in and out.

think of soundstage like listening to several bands out in an open park compared with listening to band right in front of your face in a closed room. while one feels more intimate like you're a part of the music the other gives you a spatial feeling of depth so its easier to pinpoint.

want bass for relatively cheap? the m50s is decent and they are build like tanks. you can see my signature link to my build at mine - that photo is of them after 5 years of daily use yet they look great. while not ideal for competitive fps gaming you can certainly play casually fine.

want something with a wider soundstage for more competitive gaming? look at the sennheiser hd518 or hd558. both are open cans with less bass than the m50 but give more advantage in fps gaming. normally i'd list the audiotechnica ad500x or ad700x for fps gaming advantage but they have very little bass output so i do not think you would like them.

the hyper x cloud isnt bad.. the cloud ii is nothing special.. similar to the hxc just with a soundcard. the best buy would be the cloud 1 core if you went with a hyper x product. as far as compared with the others... its convenient to have a headset all in one (if you will use the mic!) but the mic is only so-so and while excellent value for the money, you might be better with just a headphone if you do not need a mic.

I just bought the hyper x cloud 1 and it is coming in the mail. It will be good to have a mic on my headphones because my friends can't hear me well using my webcam mic. I like how you can remove the mic from the headset. I mainly play battlefield 4 and I just got battlefront so having a gaming headset will be good. Thank you for the advice!
