Question Maintain external monitor state after power off/restart

I have a Dell G7 running windows 10 connected to an external monitor via HDMI. It used to save state after power down, but now every time I switch on the laptop with HDMI connected I get a blank screen on both laptop and monitor.

The steps I have to take to get both monitors back on are these:
1: Unplug HDMI (laptop screen no longer blank)
2: Log in
3: Plug in HDMI (laptop screen now blank again)
4: Press windows+P twice (screen no longer blank, screen choice menu appears)
5: Choose duplicate
6: Turn on external monitor
7: windows+P
8: Choose extend

*note:
*If I choose extend before duplicate the external monitor will remain blank.
*External monitor is currently set to main display

I would like to make it so when I switch on my laptop the screens are automatically how I left them when the machine was powered off.

Any insight hugely appreciated!
