Malware that Malwarebytes isn't detecting

Went to a friend's mother's house tonight to look into a laptop that suddenly wasn't working. Long story short, she's getting a pop-up that says "microsoft windows is corrupted call windows support at 707-709-8707."

I updated Malwarebytes and did a scan...nothing found. I asked if she had done anything out of the ordinary in the past few days before this started. She said she downloaded "a book on diabetes" she found on the Internet. She also said the laptop updated to Windows 10 on its own a while ago. All righty then.

Any thoughts on what I might try to straighten this out?
