Mic doesn't work when both slots of sound card is used

There are 2 sound jacks and 1 mic jack. The mic doesn't work when the second jack is used. So whenever I want to use my mic I need to unplug one of the sound jacks that are being used and only use one, only on the first port. Is it just a problem with the sound card or is there a way to enable my mic while the second jack port is being used?
