Okay,
I have a gaming computer with a AMD Fx Quad Core, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon 6670 (1GB DDR5 Version) and a 500w PSU but NO soundcard. The motherboard is a half decent Gigabyte 78LMT- S2P with on-board audio.
The microphone I have is built into this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plantronics-86050-05-Gamecom-Gaming-Headset/dp/B0079G2Y2A/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1383995547&sr=8-2&keywords=PC+Headset

I bought it because of its (VERY) reasonable price and for the fact it supposedly (according to multiple reviews) had a half decent microphone on it.

However, whenever I plug the microphone line-in into either of the inputs on my computer (there is one on the front and one on the back) I get a sound that sounds like this: http://www.mediafire.com/?xrsuh2wjt91w518
or if link not working (mediafire is pretty bad) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FExWic6Y3jM&feature=youtu.be

Its quite quiet in the youtube video but you get the idea. Its like a weird static noise that sounds like interference.

(My other headset worked PERFECTLY...infact, I'm sure it had the best audio quality I'v ever actually heard from a microphone on a headset.)

Any ideas on what could be causing this background noise? :S

Can you check Device Manager and check if there are any errors in the Sound Device section?
