Redmond (WA) - Microsoft has started a new initiative that it hopes will make mobile phones more affordable for people in developing countries, in a move similar to the highly publicized "One Laptop Per Child" program.

Yeah, well, the major improvement a laptop like the OLPC has, is that it has a larger screen and a keyboard.
Microsoft is touting this 'phone' because while it indeed costs less to produce and then sell, once you have one you gotta pay connection fees otherwise it becomes little more than a fancy paperweight.
