Monitor turns off when VGA adaptor plugged in

My Lenovo ThinkPad only has a VGA output but the projector I'm using needs HDMI, so I bought a converter. Every time I plug in the VGA converter my monitor turns off. I don't see anything on the projector either.

Please help!

Most likely, the Thinkpad is trying to output to the external display instead of duplicating it. You can check this in your settings.
Also it is likely that the projector needs a certain minimum resolution or refresh rate that the VGA is not giving and may not be capable of. Check your Projector manual.
You might be able to output the VGA to a TV but, any more, those have a minimum resolution as well.

Good luck and be well.

How do I check it in settings? When I am not connected to the VGA output, the settings only show a single monitor. When I do attach a VGA output, my screen goes blank!

Also - it happens whenever I plug in a VGA cord - even when I'm not attached to any projector! so I'm not sure it has to do with the refresh/resolution rate.
