Does anyone know if this kind of apps works?

Supposedly it repels insects by playing a high-pitched tone through the phone speaker.

Try it and see.
There are some products like that out there that are not for phones but are just regular sound emiting devices. Look for those and see what the reviews say. If the app can generate the same sound, it should act exactly the same way.
