Move your iTunes media folder on Macs

Your media files may be taking up a large amount of space on your Mac’s hard drive, but you can easily move files to a new hard drive if you follow these steps.

Step 1: First, open up iTunes and click on the iTunes menu and then Preferences. Click on the Advanced button to open up the Advanced Preferences menu. Then select the option that says, “Keep iTunes Media folder organized.” Click OK to save your settings.

Step 2: Next, click on the Change button, which will open up a new window with folder details. You can pick a new location where all iTunes Media content will be saved.

Step 3: Click on New Folder, select a name for your new iTunes Media file, and click on Create.
Click on the Open button, and then select OK.

Step 4: If you’re running iTunes 9 or later, click on File then select Library and Organize Library. Click on ‘Consolidate files’ and select OK. All your media files will move to the new iTunes Media folder right away.

Step 5: If you’re using iTunes 7 or 8, select File then click on Library and Consolidate Library. Click on “Consolidate files” and then click OK. Your files will begin to move to the new location instantly.

Step 6: Locate and delete your original iTunes library by dragging it to the Trash. Simply quit and restart iTunes, and you’re done!
