I cant decide which laptop to buy, I'm an architecture student and was wondering is getting the i7 or i5 makes difference in doing some CAD's and rendering stuff. and which laptop do you think fits best for me?

MSI GE60 (i7 gtx850m):

MSI GE70 (i5 gtx 860m):

Lenovo y50 (i5 gtx 860m):

Lenovo y50 (i7 gtx 860m)

I'm gonna use it for the long run so I need a laptop that would last longer interms of physical and hardware, if you could suggest a laptop that is close to this price range ($1000-1200) that is better that would be nice,

THANKS!

Dude, you just moved the game to a whole new level :wahoo:. Great machine. Just add another 8 gb memory to get them working in dual channel mode and you will unleash the true beast in this machine.

I've seen posts that the y50 always have temp throttle issue which makes fps drop.. I had a ge60 before and it never throttle due to temp.. it only have like 75c max temp because it has a good cooling system.. Im afraid that if i buy the lenovo y50 i wouldnt be satisfied due to temp throttling.. Does the lenovo y50 really have a bad cooling system?

I have recently seen a post, which I tried to contribute to. I think you will find it very informative.

That's the thread that led me to actually questioning the lenovo y50's colling system.. :) what do you think of these laptops are consistent in terms of performance and gives the best gaming/cad experience?

Though the Lenovo y50 (i7 gtx 860m) is a much better value for your money and overall a much faster machine than the MSI, if you are afraid of throttling, do not buy it. But if you can live with it, it is unmatched at that price.
I would suggest you to go with the MSI GE 70, as it is a very good machine and will offer you nearly the same experience as the Lenovo.

does i5 have a huge performance difference compared to i7? for CAD and gaming or getting the i7 is an overkill?

No, in most cases, other than synthetic benchmarks and a few games (like Assassin's Creed Unity), you will not be able to tell the difference between the i5 and i7 you are comparing. The 860m is a great GPU and most modern graphics related programs are tuned to stress the GPU, rather than the CPU.

Java:
Get the MSI, you can put 2 msata drives in it and 32gb of ddr3 but it only has 3 dimms so when they release 16gb dimm of ram that will be worth it. it has a button for cooler boost and it come with the intel core i7. yes you do get 5 frames better with the y50 but when you throw in a 2.5 inch 500gb samsung ssd and 2 1tb msata ssd in raid 0 the msi overall performance is 50 frames better than the lenovo. full FHD display or 1080p hdmi that plays 4k or 5k. rgb backlit keyboard. and the exhaust ports on the lenovo is only one not two.
