Does anyone know if there is way to remove the MSN Messenger integration from Outlook Express? I find it very annoying that you can't open Outlook Express without MSN Messenger insisting on opening too and then you can't close it until you have closed OE.

Thanks in advance :)

From Outlook Express...

<b>Tools > Options

General tab</b>

Deselect "automatically log on to Windows Messenger"

That should work, guess I'd better try it

Ah typical MS, it doesn't work.

With that option deselected, launching OE6 still launches Messenger, it just doesn't sign you in.

So you still can't exit Messenger while OE is running <sigh>

Yep, thats about it, as mentioned it can be disabled from startup through outlook itself. There would be a reg' hack for sure but I do not know it. The tray icon uses 1.3mb closed to 2.7Mb signed in - just in memory alone simply sitting there so it would be worth the trouble of removing the sucker if you don't use it!

I know it is extra work to exit it which will kill it until you restart or initiate it with other software, but I do use MSM so I have not looked into eliminating it yet.

I just tried that and Outlook takes quite a while to start! When I reverse it it is ok, but I am happy enough to have it not signed in when I start outlook.
I also noticed in TweakXP by Total Idea that it has a disabling function for messenger as well although I have not tried that as yet.

Backup your registry first. Then, do the following listed <A HREF="http://216.239.35.100/search?q=cache:amJAmHYK3FMC:www.btvillarin.com/windows_xp/troubleshoot.html+disable+msn+messenger+and+outlook+express+site:btvillarin.com&hl=en&ie=UTF-8" target="_new">here</A>. (That's Google's cache of my site)

Now, I'm off to work late.

Actually in TweakXP you can uninstall it completely under "system+File tweaks" then "Add / remove".

Other than that its either the reg hack above which is too slow starting OE in 30+ seconds, or putting up with it and disable its start up in OE tools, which also means the icon will still appear as not signed in and you still cannot close it until OE is closed.

There must be another hack to kill it surely?

"starting OE in 30+ seconds"

F********ck.

Well, here's my little $.02 on this issue.

When I install XP, Massagener is down in the tray. I open it up, go under settings and start unclicking everything. Run in background, load at startup; everything.

Then, I delete everything in the messenger folder.

WHOA!

What a minute...no, it seems that I just nuke the entire folder itself. There's no "Windows Messenger" folder in existence on my machine. I probably friggin nuked every single registry entry too.

My bad.

Is that Usd? heh

Anyway It would be handy if it would not add itself to the tray when I open OE, I would prefer it to be opened when I go and click on it!

 Whatever!

It's lame, but I'm not sure of another hack other than via the registry.

I came across these, though:

<A HREF="http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/989/" target="_new">Remove Windows Messenger from Outlook Express</A> (Small Registry Entry)

<A HREF="http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1049/" target="_new">Remove Windows Messenger from Internet Explorer</A> (Small Registry Change)

But, this one looks like it'll work best, <b>without manually hacking the registry</b>!

<A HREF="http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_messenger_autorun.htm" target="_new">Prevent Windows Messenger from automatically running</A> (a VBS file with available undo script)

I hope that last one works. Try that one first, at least...
