There seems to be an accuracy issue here. Whatsapp ended its annual subscription fee in 2016, so it is free, not "essentially free".

With the reoccurring instances of malware penetrating the security of supposedly safe sites like the Play Store I am very careful about the apps I download on my devices. For his reason I steer clear of the app of the week these sites promote and stick to the basics. I purchase feature-filled devices so that I don't have to download a bunch of apps or wait with baited breath for the release of the newest OS to give me the options I find useful.
