My Laptop's headset port doesn't work properly

My Laptop (Dell Isnpiron 3542) has only one mic/sound port intended for a full headset, yet every time I plug my smartphone headset (they are compatible with all my devices) or my Beats by Dre with the mic cable my laptop won't detect the microphone and will just use it's internal...
Just saying that I had my laptop formated some days after I bought it and perhaps there could be a driver missing. If it's like that where can I find it? "My Dell" software says that all my drivers are updated and so does My Device Manager.
Please help.

Go to your sound options and recording devices. See if you can detect it there.
