My mac laptop was stolen and I am worried about information in the computer falling onto wrong hands .will the criminals be able to open it since I have a password in it.

If they are determined, they can. If just some thief wanting some quick drug cash, they couldn't care less about your data, and just want to sell the hardware.

You did not take precaution then of setting up FIND MY LAPTOP? and/or encrypting your bank accounts file?
