my toshiba laptop has stopped playing CD's and when I try to rip a CD I just get 'error ' in the status column

My laptop has stopped playing CD's and when I try to rip a CD to my laptop instead of getting ' pending' followed by ' ripping to library' in the status column I just get ' error'

Yeah if playing isn't working ripping will not work either.
What have you tried? Installing new drivers?
Do you still hear the CD turn when you close the CD-Bay?
What laptop is it? What windows do you run?
