Hello everyone. I came here for advice to build my first ever desktop gaming cpu a little over a year ago and its been running great! Now its time to purchase a laptop. I've used the sticky post as a guide. In general, this laptop will be used primarily when I travel (both work and personal vacation). In regards to work, I mainly will be using programs such as Office and Adobe Acrobat. The ability to have two documents open side by side that are readable and that don't require side scrolling when doing so are preferred. I'd like a laptop with good battery life so that I can go extended periods without using a charger, in particular for in-flight movies/tv shows. The only other uses I could think of with this laptop would be general web browsing and light gaming (ie. facebook games, etc.).

1. What is your budget?
I would like to go no higher than $600-700, unless there is a really good reason that I should.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
I think anything larger than 15.6 is too big, but I also don't want something too small. I'll need to have 2 documents open side by side on occasion and I need it to be easily readable and hopefully without having to scroll excessively.

3. What screen resolution do you want?
Prob needs to be at least 1366 x 768. Would need advice based on Question 2 response.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
This laptop would be portable and used when traveling for work.

5. How much battery life do you need?
Long enough. What's long enough? I would like to avoid using the charger as much as possible. Also, I'd at least like to be able to watch a full movie on a plane without my laptop dying.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
No. I use my gaming desktop for this purpose. The most I plan to play on this laptop are facebook games, etc.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Primarily will use for work related stuff (Office, Acrobat, etc.) and for general web browsing and watching tv/movies.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
Doesn't really matter. Most HDDs I'll never fill up since they generally are 500gigs+ nowadays. SDDs, while nice, aren't a necessity for this at this time.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
Newegg and Tigerdirect. Any brick and mortar store. Any other reputable online stores.

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
I would say at least 3 years.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
DVD r/w

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I prefer Intel unless someone can tell me why to go AMD in a certain laptop.

13. What country do you live in?
USA

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
-Keep weight in mind since this will mainly be used when traveling.
-While touchscreens are nice on the metro design, I don't need necessarily need it.
-Need a good keyboard/trackpad (back-lighting isn't necessary)

I know this is a late post, but quick responses on nice Black Friday deals would be a plus.

I recommend the 14" Lenovo ThinkPad L440 for $590 (BLACKFRIDAY coupon code). I would upgrade to the i5-4200m for $50; the base clockspeed is only 100Mhz higher than the Core i3, but Turbo Boost can increase to a max of 3.1GHz. However, that is not an absolute necessity for a pure office laptop. However, I would definitely upgrade the 1366x768 resolution screen to 1600x900 for $50. From person experience 1366x766 is too low for effective multitasking like having two documents opened side by side.

Make sure you select the "Micro Hard Drive" upgrade which costs $0. This should be a 16GB SSD cache for the hard drive. It should be the new M.2 format drive as opposed to mSATA. If you do not select this then the motherboard will very likely not come with a M.2 slot for a future upgrade. For now M.2 SSD are almost 2x the cost of mSATA SSD. That should go down with time. And in the future you can buy something like a 128GB M.2 SSD and use it as a primary drive. You need to google on how to set that to the primary drive though.

It only comes with 4GB of RAM, the upgrade to 8GB costs $80. You should be able to buy a 4GB RAM stick for about $50 and install it yourself.

Battery life is rated up to 12 hours, but that is likely just a benchmark using a program like Battery Eater. With "normal usage" I would estimate that at worse the battery would be 6 hours and at best around 8.5 hours.

That's not bad, but by the time you factor in the upgrades you are getting slightly above what I want to spend. I may just have to wait for a better deal.

For your needs the only upgrade that would be necessary is the 1600x900 resolution screen for $50 so that you can effective multitask. The upgrade to a Core i5 is not necessary to fulfill your requirements and neither is the additional 4GB of RAM (8GB total). Office applications will run fine of 4GB if RAM which is what I currently do. Therefore, you will only need to spend $631 with the "BLACKFRIDAY" coupon code which also discounts the $50 option for the display. Choosing the $50 upgrade to the Core i5 brings it to $672 due to the coupon code.

Sorry for the late reply. I still haven't made a final decision but I did come across this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5524207&csid=_61

It is on sale for $449.99 down from 629.99. I do have a Tigerdirect store around the corner from me so I can buy it in store and hopefully give it a test drive to get a feel for the keyboard, etc. What is your opinion on this compared to the Lenovo? I know this wouldn't have the higher resolutions that I would've liked and it utilizes AMD over Intel, but it would save myself a couple hundred bucks pricewise.
