Need some help please

I have a Samsung s3 that I used to have on a post pay account. I cancel that account about a year ago. I would like to be able to get another prepaid account but I was wondering if I would be able to use the Samsung s3 phone as a prepaid phone. I am trying to avoid purchasing a prepaid phone unless I have too.
