Need to upgrade

Both my tablet and laptop have recently been on the fritz. Laptop was a Samsung 6 years old and the tablet is 4 years old. I'm so outdated for tech...I'm stuck in 2012. I have two young kids and would love to get a family friendly general use compact option or two to help us move on up to 2018. If you didn't guess...we don't have a "smart home". Android/p.c. for a long time but out of the loop now with a medium budget.

Well... looking around, I've found some. If you don't mind the reduced warranty with a refurbished product, there's this: https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/toshiba-tecra-r950-intel-i7-8gb-ram-750gb-hdd-1-gb-radeon-graphics-windows-10-1-year-warranty-refurbished/12294401.aspx?

Otherwise, for new stuff:

I wouldn’t do a detachable 2 in 1, because maybe someone will lose the actual device and only have the keyboard or vice versa, so maybe an android tablet. iPads can only do one user account, and some kids who know the passwords to one’s Apple ID can practically take over administrator access to the iPad, while certain android tablets have a user selection feature. Maybe one of the Galaxy S tabs.

Please note: Blu-ray is not possible at this price point, though from what i can tell, these recommendations are capable of playing DVDs. There are a lot of laptops out there.

If you want to keep looking (which I highly suggest), here's a bit of general opinion: Asus is considered a higher quality brand (by most people) and Acer has a robust warranty program (based on what my friend went through). Nothing is guaranteed though, so brands like HP, Toshiba, and Lenovo should be alright.

You may also consider saving up a bit - maybe $100 - $250 more - which will open up a whole new level of performance and future-readiness. The current products under $600 aren't that great as a whole, but they will serve your immediate purpose.
