I've been out of the game for a while as far as keeping up with the latest developments. I have a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 with an i7-3632QM @ 2.20GHz, 8GB RAM & a 1TB HD that I use for both business and personal tasks. I need a new device for the family to use for web browsing, word processing and various other things. I'm looking to either get a dedicated device for that or replace my laptop so the family can use the old one. But, I don't want to get a new laptop that has a slower processor than my current laptop.

Just going on the benchmarks, it looks like my current CPU is faster than any laptop I can find for under $1,000. I know the newer laptop will have more RAM, but other than that, it looks like I will be taking a step back unless I spend more money, which I'm not prepared to do at the moment.

Am I missing something?

Edit: I should also clarify that I am interested in a 15" or larger screen; I need HDMI out; if at all possible, I want VGA out; I also prefer 4 USB ports with at least 3 being USB 3.0; 12+GB RAM; 1TB HD. I know, I don't ask for much....

No, I haven't been out of the game THAT long. There was a time when CPU clock speed was the only metric to look at to determine performance, but I know there are many different factors to look at. I looked at the PassMark Average CPU Mark scores for comparison. For example the Average CPU Mark for:
i7-3632QM = 6933 (my current laptop);
i7-6500U = 4325 (laptops I've seen in the price range and with configurations I'm looking for);
i7-6700HQ = 8005 (laptops more expensive than what I would like, but more performance).

And no, I'm not looking for an Ultrabook. I use my laptop as a desktop replacement rather than to be as small as possible....
