New Sidekick LX Intentionally Broken

Tried searching for software for the device. Encountered a site that promised Java apps for the PDA phone, got this instead:

NOTICE: We're sorry, our records indicate that while this phone supports Java, it's locked to prevent downloads from third-party sites.

Any new Sidekick owners here encountering this intentional limitation?

I don't have a sidekick, but I do know lots of phones subsidized by US carriers are intentionally "broken". Anyone remember that Verizon(?) RAZR that couldn't accept files via Bluetooth?
