I put this in the home audio thread but I don't know if this classes as home audio or peripherals so sorry for the double post :/

Hi guys, I currently own the discontinued Logitech X-540 system (with a Xonar DX), which has served me well but has finally developed some faults so I'm ready to get a new system.

I was looking at its successor, the Z506, and can get a good deal on it, but after some research a lot of people seem to be saying that these bundled PC speakers aren't worth the money and that home cinema speakers used with a PC are better value.

I'm not very experienced in this area, so how would home cinema speakers plug into my PC? I'm used to the 3 black orange and green cables my speakers came with, not sure if it would be the same to setup the non-PC specialised ones. Also what speakers would you recommend? I'm on a bit of a budget, probably don't want to go too much higher than £100 RRP unfortunately. I definitely would like a subwoofer, surround sound isn't a requirement though as the speakers will all be put next to my monitor, really I just want something fairly loud and having extra speakers is one way to achieve that 😉 And the best quality for the money. These will be used for music, possibly parties, gaming and films.

Thanks in advance for your help 😀

Solution
If you have the budget, buy the Z623.
It looks to me like it has a superior, larger sub.
If you buy cheaper, you will always wonder if you should have bought the better unit.

It sounds to me like the Z506 or similar is about what you want.
Many speaker sets for home theater are very high quality.
But, they are expensive and probably need to be connected to an amplifier.

If you particularly like the subwoofer, look for one with a large speaker.
The lowest available response frequently is directly related to the size of the speaker cone.
Wattage sells, but do not go overboard on that. There are practical limits on how much your ears and neighbors can stand.

Thanks for the reply! 😀 Yeah I think the PC speakers are the way to go, although I don't really understand the specifications. Due to space constraints all the speakers are just going to go next to my monitor, so should I get the 5.1 system or get a more powerful 2.1 set?

I was looking at the Z506 vs either the Z533 or Z623, the 623 is a little more expensive than I was aiming but it seems to have a lower frequency response and I do like a good subwoofer 😉 It also has way more watts, possibly overkill but my current system doesn't really fill the room which I'd like it to. Which would you recommend?

Thanks 😀
