Nikon D3100 / Good starting DSLR?

I am looking to purchase my first dslr and spending around $300 (used or refurbished). I was looking at the Nikon D3100, are there any better cameras in this price range? Also, is this camera still worth purchasing even though it's a few years old? I will be using it mostly for photos. I am very new to this kind of stuff, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Personally, I think it would be an excellent choice and believe you will have a hard time finding something better in that price range.
