My Compaq laptop recently crashed, but when it came back up, and after I did research due to message audio service not running, I found out I was missing audio endpoint builder file (dll?) & audio svc file. I've had HP & Geek Squad remote my laptop and tell me I likely need to restore. I no longer have the Vista disks, no knowledge how to backup my hard drive, and no desire to. I also have no firewall due to missing files & no network icon in lower right corner of screen and the remote people couldn't get it back. I have the best extended warranty for laptops from Best Buy but it only covers hardware, so my hard drive would have to crash. To do what they suggested and not lose my info could cost up to $280 that I don't have. My wifi does work, no infection is found, but computer is somewhat sluggish. I'm looking to perhaps utilize a new netbook - 7" ECS or other for $99 online, but only 256 ram & 2gb 'capacity'?(unsure if that's how much is installed), hard drive. I just want to be able to watch/listen (to) some audio/video (i.e from fox news or my newspaper, etc.)on the netbook, no downloads. Any suggestions on any of above/ Thanks

Did you run system restore to set the computer back to the time before it had the problem? Sounds rather like a virus attack, to disable the firewall, and you should not be online without that. What anti virus are you using?
