Linux is your friend.. .Its free.. works fantastic with older hardware and will do everything you need. Linux is also safer to use than older versions of Windows since you wont need a AV running. With older hardware like that spending cash on a Windows key is just wasting your money.
The problem here is support. Browsers themselves are dropping Vista and XP along with a long list of Anti Viruses, even Youtube under Windows 7 and above will struggle.
