If you have another computer you can download windows for free from Microsoft (pay them for a product key after installation) and put it on a USB and install it that way or you can buy an OEM copy from a sales place.

Linux is your friend.. .Its free.. works fantastic with older hardware and will do everything you need. Linux is also safer to use than older versions of Windows since you wont need a AV running. With older hardware like that spending cash on a Windows key is just wasting your money.

you can also get the restore cd from ebay or the vendor for not a lot of cash. just make sure on the laptop is an oem key.

The problem here is support. Browsers themselves are dropping Vista and XP along with a long list of Anti Viruses, even Youtube under Windows 7 and above will struggle.
