No Signal from External HP Pavilion Monitor to Acer laptop

I unplugged my laptop from the monitor to take it to work. Came home, rehooked up all the cables correctly and completely (double, triple checked) and now there is 'no signal' and my monitor goes to sleep. I have run all my spyware, shut everything down, rebooted, unplugged etc. Nothing helps. Can anyone shed some light please? Thanks!

maybe needs setting up in Display Properties, or you might have inadvertently pressed a key which turns off external.
