We cannot get any sound to play - we've tried using an hdmi cable and when that didn't work an optical out...

Solution
On some TVs you have to turn the TV speakers off to get the audio output to work. They don't make that clear in the instructions.
Just to repeat what has been said above. You have to turn the optical output on in the TV menu and set it to bitstream 5.1.
You also have to assign the optical connection to an input such as TV or video 1 in the receiver input set up menu. If it's set to HDMI for audio rather than say optical 1 you won't get any sound.

Hi
Thanks but we are not connecting to a pc so I don't understand the question.
We are trying to connect external speakers via our onkyo AV receiver to our LG TV
Thanks

I did ask the question if you were trying to connect to a graphics card and got confused when you said you tried those things which made me think further you were connecting a pc. Sorry didnt realise you were responding to alex.

So your TV and receiver

As alex has said may need to turn optical on in the TV menu if theres an option. Most tvs should have that option to enable/disable and some do it automatically.

What model TV is it? And from where do you want sound to come from?
