no speakers sound option

I have a windows 8 machine given to me by my son who used an hdmi tv as a monitor. I cant get any sound through the speakers. When I check the playback sound options the only choice visible is Digital Audio (HDMI) which is currently shown (correctly) as unplugged/disabled. I have tried connecting three different sets of speakers but it doesnt change anything even if I reboot with the speakers connected How can I get sound to my speakers? Be really grateful for any help
