Noisy drive on uher report l

my long dormant uher l model, never mucked with since new, was just turned on and works fine except for a terrible metal-to-metal sounding transport noise during playback... any ideas what's wrong? thank you!! joe at coffee18@verizon.net

Hi Joe!
The posting is old but I'm sure you still have it ...so here goes. The Uher reports were famous for their quality, and sound but one of it's weak points is the capstan drive wheel. It is a cast aluminium, with a rubber surface, bonded to the outer edge to provide friction via a"jockey" wheel which actually drove it. Over time the rubber dries out and the motor vibrations are then introduced back into the playback. Only solution is replacement of the capstan wheel.
