Hi,

I'm choosing between these:

Gateway - NV5462H - $499.99 NEW

-Intel Pentium T4400
-4GB RAM
-250GB HDD

HP - G61-408CA) - $499.99 NEW

-AMD Athlon II Dual Core M300
-3GB RAM DDR2
-320GB HDD

HP - G60-511CA - $519.99 Demo (no scratches, very good condition)

-Intel Pentium T4300
-4GB RAM DDR2
-250GB HDD

I'm not sure which to get. I don't really mind that the G60 is a demo since I saw the condition of the laptop myself. Price doesn't really matter that much since it's only $20 difference.

I don't game so I don't care about the video card or the sound card, as long as they have one, I'm good. All I really care about is the RAM and the processor.

The Gateway was kind of a no-brainer for me at first because of the specs but I hear from people that it has poor quality and I'm aiming for something that will last for at least 2-3 years. I also read that tech support is almost non-existent. I was also thinking of getting extended warranty for any laptop I buy since I will take them to school everyday. What I will mostly do is programming. Let me know if you guys need anything else.

Thank you.

I am actually looking at replacing my dead HP with that same Gateway machine.
I can't speak to the quality of Gateway products because I foudn this post trying to find that information myself.
However after my experience with HP and my last laptop (dv6600 series) I will never be buying one again. Just after a year of use parts started to die and then recalls were issued (Battery and network card) had recalls issued. The network card they actually did fix even though it was a few months past the warantee so they did well for that. However another 6 months or so later when I found that the battery had been recalled they were not willing to do anything about that.

So within less than 3 years wit 2 recall defects, and a dead hard drive. I will not be considering an HP again. Of course it is possible I just got a lemon and it was all bad luck but...

To put this in perspective the Dell that I was using before I sold to a friend and it is still in daily use now at 7 years old.
