I've been looking for information about whether the mobile Nvidia GPU 960M is fully powered by an i5 or whether it needs an i7. Specifically I am talking about a 6300HQ versus a 6700HQ. I am looking at the budget gaming laptop from Dell, the Inspiron 15 7000 series. There are 2 Inspirons and they are both identical and both come with an Nvidia 960M GPU, but one of them has the i7 6700HQ for $899 and the other has the i5 6300HQ for $749. The specific gaming requirement that I have is The Sims 4 and also note that there is often a lot of custom content in the game that seems to be 3D heavy.

Would an i5 6300HQ hobble the 960M? Thanks.

WildCard is right. The Sims 4 is not extremely CPU intensive, so the i5 will be sufficient, and the extra money can be used for The Sims 4 expansions or an SSD. Or maybe extra ram if the laptop have less than 8GB.
