One cord line in mic headphones dont output sound and work as a mic

I have a pair of line in mic headphones that have one audio jack. I have tried many things, and nothing seems to work. Please help.

They are likely for a phone.

I agree, if they've got an in-line mic with a mute button, they'll usually only work on a mobile phone.
