Discussion Optical connections

My sky box optical connection is connected to my sound bar.could I connect my Apple TV to the sound bar using a splitter or would a switch be better

A splitter might work if the source you didn't want to use was turned off. An optical switch will definitely work.
If your TV has an optical audio output then the simplest solution is to connect the soundbar to it.
