How about the Panasonic LX-H680? Perhaps, the only Panasonic LD player with an
AC-3 RF output included.
However, the 680 is essentially the equivalent, feature-wise, to the Pioneer
CLD-D406. The 680 is also a fairly rare model, too. But, something like the
Pioneer CLD-D606 is vastly superior, much less the CLD-D704 and DVL-700.
Believe it or not, but some of Pioneer's DVD/LD combo units are not bad and
actually do have excellent video performance. The only problem would be with
spindle slip, but this was a problem that occured in other Pioneer
combi-players including the CLD-99 and CLD-D704. I can say this as I own and
use a DVL-700. It is a great performer and I've not had any problems with it
as of yet.
Sorry to say, but if you want the finest LD player for the lowest price:
Pioneer. Nothing else. This is really because there are more Pioneer players
than any other brand. And while there are only one or two decent players from
Panasonic and Sony, Pioneer has a lot more good models than the others from
entry-level to high end.
I've not that much experience with Panasonic players except the LX-H670.
For Sony, the MDP-1000 is decent while the MDP-605 and MDP-650 are all that I
would recommend from them (all the others are forgettable).
The CLD-S201 is a fine entry-level player. Next up could be the CLD-D504.
Further up can include the CLD-D406 and then the CLD-D606. Then you go to the
DVL-700, DVL-909, and DVL-919. Then you've got the CLD-D704 and CLD-99. And,
finally, the HLD-X9. But those aren't all the models that are recommended, as
some older Pioneer players like the CLD-1010 were also praised.
The only Pioneer LD players that I would never recommend on anyone would be the
LD-870 (no digital audio and no special frills, get yourself a good old LD-660
or Pioneer OEMed Sylvania VP-7200 instead). I also do not recommend any of the
5 CD combi-changer models (serious reliability problems). - Reinhart
