PC not booting up, shows black screen with a Hyphen blinking.Inspiron 15, Windows 8.1 64 Bit

Make certain that the storage drive is what is being booted from. You PC could be attempting to boot from a CD or DVD inserted in the computer, or a USB drive connected.

Try removing any external hard drives,Pendrives,Cd's or DVD's from your pc. These are the prime culprits when it comes to the blinking hyphen.By the way do you get an error message stating : "An OS wasn't found try disconnecting any media that do not contain an OS and try again."
