I will be getting Win 10 with HDMI port. The video card is AMD Radeon R5 M335 4GB DDR3

Receiver is Denon Avrx1200 w

Am I going to have any trouble with playback of any movies. I do not wish to trans-code, burn, or anything other than dl and play. Will the HdMI/video card play all formats that the receiver supports. This receiver supports all the way to DTSX, which is not applicable to that many movies that I know of, it also supports Dolby Atmos, same scenario. Do you think that this (HDMi) is the most efficient way to play music via Itunes. As opposed to Ipod which sounds best for now compared to Airplay. Thank you.

so you will be getting a laptop with windows 10 and a hdmi out jack? (that video card is a mobile version) what model laptop?

what resolution screen? what resolution tv? (or did you want just sound output not video too? not passthrough)

i have my primary pc (not laptop and win7 based) hooked up via hdmi to a receiver (using passthrough for video to the tv) and it works great for movies, games and itunes. when traveling i hook my laptop up via hdmi to televisions as well and that works good (not usually to receivers, but this should not be an issue). most of the troubles i see are screen clipping or resolution issues (which can be fixed by altering overscan/underscan typically.. or running the tv as a second display instead of copy mode)

could you have issues? perhaps, although most can often be worked through. win10 is a bit buggy so there could be unexpected driver issues (possibly). in most cases however any laptop with hdmi out should work.

is itunes via hdmi better than an ipod? depends on if you are getting any distortion/static via airplay. technically hdmi is uncompressed so offers full quality but not everyone may be able to hear the difference over compressed or OTA transmitted mediums.

Ok Thanks for your reply. Let me try and answer all, I hate it when I have to re ask mine :)

Except I am buying it from Dell.

My tv is 1920/1080/60p/i . I want all video, music, audio , passthrough I know works. I want to know whether the ITunes is better via HDMI compared to Ipod via usb? Imo Ipod is better in quality than Airplay, it sounds comparable to tape vs cd. They are good speakers Definitive Cinema.

okay looks like your laptop and tv are both 1080p so you shouldnt have any wonky display issues which is good - just overscan/underscan possibly which is easy stuff. i just wanted to verify that you wouldnt have any surprises.

ipod direct via usb or pc via hdmi? when talking about AUDIO files (not video) honestly assuming the files are the same quality you should not notice a difference other than any particulars your DAC or equalizer settings impart. i've hooked up my ipod via the usb connector (but mostly use the pc) and i certainly cant tell the difference myself. i'm on some klipsch speakers myself. i prefer pc input as i'm normally on the pc and find it easier to pull up the files i want quicker however i use usb when the rest of my system is off and i need to play music without starting up the pc and its convenient.

as for video content support, i've not tried it myself from ipod direct to my receiver but it should also be similar other than any changes your graphics card settings impart on the content (brightness, contrast, etc).

Ok. I didn't expect much difference since they are both hard connections. I just thought HDMI would be superior to usb. No plans to do any video through USB. IPod can be a bit of an inconvenience. You have to turn on/off the receiver in order to prevent "please wait" or hung up when d/reconnecting the usb or IPod. DAC? I had to look that up. Do I have any control over that? Do you suggest using Itunes? Is there a better player? Considering I don't plan on changing the quality. A lot are 320, a lot are remixes by unknown artists so hard to get that good. Do you recommend messing with EQ on Itunes. Mine is off. I would think the receiver would override it anyway. Thanks.

not sure about your receiver but mine has a dedicated ipod port with itunes control. its a bit clunky but it works. been awhile since i used it but i think theres a short delay when reconnecting or disconnecting but i dont remember it bothering me that much. agreed that the ipod is a bit of a pain compared with pc control but its okay for when your pc is off.

i suppose i shouldnt have used the term DAC in this case as that is incorrect: what i meant was that sometimes your internal hardware (video card on laptop for hdmi out or ipods internal hardware) can impart some changes on how a sound is heard depending on settings. basically your audio drivers/software/firmware (depending on device). generally not an issue but i've certainly heard of cases where different hardware sounds different when playing the same file despite not having any settings changed. i wouldnt worry about this too much though.

for music? itunes is fine (and keeps things organized). some will say winamp is the way to go but i've never used that way myself. depends on your preferences i suppose. technically even WMP would work. if you have the EQ set on itunes it should apply even over a digital connection. leaving the EQ off or on neutral lets you hear music how it was meant to be heard - i would only change the EQ if you want to change it to your own preferences. for instance sometimes i run the electronic EQ setting since it makes music sound more exciting (i listen to mostly electronica, kpop, jpop, rock, screamo, and vocalists). dont quote me on this but i think the receivers own EQ settings would apply overtop your software settings in windows. - i would suggest just leaving one on neutral (or off) and adjusting it on just one device for ease of use.

for movies powerdvd works great although i have to admit to mostly using windows media player (on windows 7.. its provided with the right codec to play dvds) since its free. if you have access to powerdvd its a great tool though with more options. mostly i watch streaming (netflix and such).
