I was just wondering, i built a new rig and on startup the option to unlock the core becomes availble. Can you tell me what the benefits are to this if any and also side effects that may occur and would this requires extra cooling and finally would this increase performace?

There will be no benefit to you since all four cores are active by default.

It will help unlock the hidden cores of some CPUs to make them x4, like the x3 740BE or the x2 555BE.

Hi.

In ur case u won't see any benefit since the X4 955 BE hasn't locked cores because is a real quad core and the only X4 that can be unlocked is the 960T that is OEM version.

Now that unlock cores works for X2 and X3 CPU and the benefit of that is easy u can buy a Phenom II X2 555 for $89 bunks and if u are a lucky guy u can unlock the other two cores stables and get the same performance that ur current X4 955 for less price.

But bear in mind that all unlocked cores won't be as good. Usually require more voltage to run, produce more heat, and doesn't overclock as good.
