Pioneer vsx-808rds why 5 1 not working

I have a Pioneer VSX-808 RDS and for some reason I can't get it to play in 5.1 when watching a movie. Connection are HDMI and Optical. I sure its something in the settings - Can you please help? Its currently set up on CD but I'm going to try DVD or VCR1

there is a difference between dolby surround and simulated surround. If the movie does not have a surround track, you may not get 5.1 sound. you may need to set simulated surround to get all speakers working.
