Police Chief: iPhone Users Are Cowards

Who does she think she's kidding, it's all about the Benjamins baby! It reminds me of all the police departments up here in NY saying "We don't ticket for revenue", and "We don't have quota's"... LOL... they make me giggle.

If enough people use tech to avoid their automated road tax then they'll be forced to scuttle the whole idea since they pay private companies to put those things in and maintain them.

I love it.

GPS enabled red light radar detectors have been out for years. Let's see, there's the Escort 9500ix and the Beltronic GX65 for starters

I know 2 people who quit the police force after getting tired of being glorified ticket writers. They don't actually have "quotas" per se, they are called "goals", at least here in CO spgs.

"With the Internet and all the new technology, it's almost impossible to stop the flow of information," she told The Washington Examiner.
Wow, it takes some guts, or utter stupidity, to admit you're trying to inflict a Police state and control the free-flow of information. What does she think this is, Communist Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, etc.. etc..?

I used to live in a city with traffic cameras. As soon as the state and county tried to get their cut of the revenue, the city turned them all off. Its about one thing and one thing only, money. If any politician or elected official tries to tell you otherwise, vote them out of office.

I consider myself to be a good member of the community, I defiantly pay my share of taxes and yes, while I want our streets to be safe, I can't stand the mentality of the people who enforce traffic laws.
Sometimes it seems every little infraction is treated as a major traffic offence. I'm talking about 5 - 10 mph over the speed limit, or a rolling yield instead of (that annoying) stop at the stop sign. If you get caught you are 99% of the time busted, no warnings, just pay up and get your points.

Thank goodness this is America baby not some communist dictatorship, so I can still get away with minor infractions (most of the time), otherwise if I'm honest I would have lost my privilege to drive a long time ago.

If police want to improve their standing with the community they should stop kicking everyone's butt for every little thing. Which as we all know would be a loss in revenue and thus will never happen.

While I understand why radar detectors are cool to have every once in a while, I've just never really understood their users' complete disregard for the law. I've never been given a ticket I didn't REALLY deserve and if anything I'd have to guess it's because I'm not a jackass when they get to the window of my car.

I've been pulled over for speeding, an illegal u-turn, running red lights, every little stupid thing imaginable, and the only ticket that ever got through was doing 60 in a 45 [which, unless you have the mentality of a redneck fifteen year old, is understandable]. I do my racing and driving for pleasure where I know noone else is getting hurt: at the track or on vacant old roads.

Anyone that tells you otherwise is just trashy.

You never got pulled over for matching the speed of traffic Ramar? Just going 10 over on the highway where the speed is set unreasonably low (55mph limit on a major interstate 3 lane, where everyone else is driving like 75, but the cop pulls you over because its the most convenient). How about getting pulled over every single day coming home from work for 10 consecutive days in a row because it just so happens to be when bars are letting out. Or, having a cop follow you 40 miles just to say your tail light is out, in his own frustration, when it clearly is NOT, so he can right you a 30 dollar ticket.

Everyone has their own unique experience with the police... and maybe for you, you think its been fair. But, personally, I wish they would stop fucking harassing people. I don't believe that using the police to generate revenue is an ethical thing to do... and I'm surprised we all put up with it.

@fulle

I completely agree with you that generating revenue through tickets is terrible and sometimes cops can be total dicks. I was 17 when pulled over for the illegal u-turn and didn't have my license on me. He wrote me a ticket for both, but I got lucky because the judge laughed it off.

My point was more about the disregard for road law, and why it is the way it is, that is common in most people [that I've met, at least] that use radar detection. It really doesn't bother me at all that they might be monitoring my speed around a corner where accidents are prone to happen or sending me a ticket for running a red light. It's just incredibly selfish, childish or paranoia-induced to think otherwise.

Dunno how it is in the states but here in aus our camera's are sign posted with billboard size warnings so if you need this tech then you're just proving you're an idiot.

That must be specific to that agency, because the agency I used to work for could care less if you wrote tickets or not. And that being said, our agency had a really bad reputation for "writing tickets". Yet the majority of our officers did not bother pulling over very many cars in a day. In fact, other officers used to give me a hard time because I did write so many tickets.

People need to stop making excuses for getting caught while violating the law. If you're speeding, you risk getting a ticket. If you get one, the only person to blame is yourself. So stop being a child and take responsibility for your actions.

Kevin Parrish,

You've accused the D.C. Police Chief of stating that "iPhone users" are "cowards". Do you have an actual quote that supports this? If so, you failed to put it into your article. Kind of hard, from a journalistic approach, to make such an accusation with nothing to quote in support of your statements. Not to mention, your article title would suggest that ALL iPhone users are cowards according to this Police Chief. Which I'm guessing is NOT what you intended to say.

It's a good thing Tomshardware does NOT get national media attention. You guys could get yourself into trouble over stuff you fail to clarify or put into your articles.
