Popping speakers

I have a Compaq Presario V6000. Vista is the operating sys. My speakers pop continually from startup. No sound will play and headphones do not work either. It first happened while using AUDACITY. Is there a way to correct this problem without doing a full system recovery?

did you try re-installing correct drivers? and focus on the word correct
when you go to hp, use the option "detect my laptop" it will give you the page for your laptop and not the main page. then download and install the latest audio drivers from 2007 and onwards the original first ones wont work properly this happened to me.
