I have also notice a great amount of deterioration of the signal on this
particular satellite, especially involving sparkles. I have tried
to resolve it by fine tuning, to no avail. As noted, this satellite has
been up there
a long time. Keep wondering when CNN and other feeds will make
their move and if they hopefully will be going digital. Is anyone aware of
information
concerning the "replacement" of this satellite or movement of feeds to a
digital format if and when
it is replaced?

It is perfectly viewable ( all channels,no sparklies) on my smaller 71/2 ft.
dish.So I would try peaking on the arc better.
I am in Oregon.

See
http://www.lyngsat.com/launches/2004.html

The dates there are not written in stone, but they are close estimates.

aren't we getting close to that time of the year when the sun is
behind the satellite and "iluminating the dish with it's STRONGER
signal" a LOT more than the satellites 36watts does?

If I recall,Galaxy 5 is one of the older series of satellites (Boeing
376) that downlink in the 8-16 watt range. The newer ones typically are
24-48 watts. It is a rather old "bird" and probably is at the end of its'
life cycle. It was launched in 1992,and had a projected life of 12
years. It is 2 years beyond that.I am rather surprised at its durability
really.

No. That happens March/October.

Those times are in March and September, near the equinoxes, with some
"spillage" into April or October depending on one's location. This is July;
nowhere near the correct time of year.

Thanks for the added info. I tend to forget the equinoxes and when they
occur.
Kinda wish that were the problem, but if there are any others out there with
possible answer(s) other than the old girl "G5" satellite is just getting
OLD, let us know.
