My tv says connect to network but cannot get to my network

You need a remote.
Some phones have one built in as well.

Assuming that you got the Firestick because you TV isn't "smart" you want to use the Firestick remote to get it onto your WIFI not the TV or the TV remote. You do need to select the HDMI input that the stick is plugged into but it seems that you did that since the "connect to network" message would be from the stick not the TV.
